Latest Update – March 2021

Posted on March 14th, 2021 by mardenscouts

I hope that this update finds you and your families well and filled with a greater sense of optimism that we are now nearing the end of lockdown restrictions and that we can soon return to normality.

Whilst the pandemic has dragged on for far longer than any of us could have predicted a year ago it is really pleasing to see how Marden Scout Group has adapted to ensure as many of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts as possible can continue to meet, albeit virtually.  Our leaders have been innovative and have adapted to holding on line meetings, something that was foreign to most this time last year; I’m sure you will join me in thanking them for their hard work, resilience and sheer dedication to providing our young people with continuity and connection to the group.

As we now look to the future and the resumption of face-to-face meetings, we need to realise that the virus is still amongst us and that we need to continue to be vigilant and ensure that both our members and leader teams remain safe. Whilst the NYA/Scout Association guidance will change as we move through the Governments roadmap out of lockdown, national restrictions will still mean severe limitations around our meeting indoors, and even outdoor meetings will continue to be subject to limited numbers & social distancing. Therefore, with this in mind the Executive Committee have taken the decision that Marden Scout Group will continue to meet virtually and regularly review our return to face to face meetings.

Our section leaders will continue to offer both off line activities and online meetings as regularly as they possibly can, but this will vary from section to section. While we recognise that on line meetings are not for everyone, they are a great way for our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to meet one another and enjoy some scouting fun.

As I am sure you are aware national restrictions are planned to end 21st June and all being well a return to “normal” Scouting. Given that we would normally break up for the summer holidays, the Executive Committee have decided to continue the suspension of monthly subs payments until September.

We will keep you updated on the Executive Committees reviews of our return to face-to-face meetings but in the meantime if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us on

Yours in Scouting

Update from the Chairman

Posted on June 14th, 2020 by mardenscouts

I hope that this update finds you and your families well and that you are coping with the restrictions of the last few months.

As I am sure you are aware that whilst we have started down the long road of the easing of restrictions the virus is still present and we need to remain vigilant and continue with the social distancing. Even though schools are commencing a tentative return for certain year groups it is not yet deemed safe, or appropriate, for groups such as ourselves to meet, the safety of our children and leaders remains our number one priority.

Whilst we have not been able to meet in person it has been fantastic to see so many of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts take part in the various activities that have been organised:

  • We had 64 children, leaders and parents take part in the World Record beating #CampAtHome challenge
  • We joined with other Kent scouts in the MAYhem Camp challenges
  • Many children have been virtual Scouting with our very own Minecraft
  • Individually many children have been working on Activity badges at home and have been trying out the hundreds of activities available through the ‘Scouts – The Great Indoors’ website

It has been great to see so many pictures posted on the Marden Scouts Facebook pages.

As we turn our attention to the, hopefully not too distant, prospect of getting back to some sort of normality I thought it appropriate to update you on a number of things:

  • Recognising that our Scouts were not able to meet, the Executive committee decided to suspend subs payments and utilise our reserves and a grant that we received from Maidstone Council to pay the ongoing running costs such as insurance and the Capitation payments to the Scouting organisation. Not all Scout Groups took the same action and we hope that we will be able to resume meetings soon as this is not financially sustainable in the long term
  • The HQ and grounds still require management and maintenance, Parental support is vital to help manage & reduce costs. Our Leaders have been up to mow the grass but we need volunteers to take this on moving forward as well as help in making the borders / paths tidy and keeping it like this
  • the exterior, and possibly the interior, of the Scout Hut HQ will need decorating, we will need help with that
  • we have had no volunteers to our recent request to help with the weekly clean of the Scout Hut and so unless help comes forward we will need to employ someone to do this

If you are able to help with any of these tasks, if you have a particular skill or are just a willing pair of hands please contact us on – all help is very gratefully received

  • We would traditionally hold our AGM prior to the break up for the summer holidays, it is highly unlikely that we will be able to do this face to face and so we will consider possibly deferring until later in the year — we will of course keep you up to date.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for your continued support and understanding during this unprecedented time; we will continue to monitor the latest Government advice in order that we can resume Scouting as soon as is possible whilst ensuring that our young people and adults stay safe.

Yours in Scouting

Calling all young people from across Marden Scout Group – COVID-19 may have changed the way we do things, but it won’t stop Scouts camping!

#CampAtHome was started by Leicestershire & Northumberland Scouts as a virtual camp throughout April with the hope to set a world record for the largest virtual camp on the 30th April with 1 Million participants!

We thought it would be fantastic for all Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in Marden to be part of setting a world record.

Here are the “Rules” – we are asking all Young People interested in joining in the fun to:

  • Pack a bag
  • Build a den at home / pitch a tent in the garden / hang up a hammock (whatever you can)
  • Sleep in your shelter of choice
  • Build a ‘campfire’ (real or virtual)
  • Take part in a “Scouty activity”
  • Help with cooking a meal

Then share photos of your camp with your leaders, and on our Facebook page (“Marden Scout Group”) and Social Media (#CampAtHome), to show that although we can’t meet “Face to Face” Scouting doesn’t stop!

We need to register everyone that wants to participate in the record attempt (on 30th April), so please email under the title #CampAtHome your full name to by no later than Saturday 19th April.

Participating will also mean all young people will gain 1 “Night Away”. This is a staged activity badge, meaning you can earn more “nights away” the more you camp. So why not set up you camp straight away and earn a “night away” for each night you participate (as long as they aren’t sleeping in your bed!!). Keep a record at home (and some photos!) and share this with your section Leaders.

Coronavirus – Meetings cancelled from 17th March

Posted on March 16th, 2020 by mardenscouts

Please note the latest update below from the Scout Association released this evening, advising that all Scouting is now suspended as from Tuesday 17th March, so all events and meeting are cancelled until further notice.

We will update further in due course but let us know on if you have any questions at all at this difficult time

Many thanks

The Executive Committee and Leaders

Marden Scout Group

From the Scout Association:

The Prime Minister has said that everyone in the UK should now avoid non-essential travel and contact with others.

Suspension of face-to-face activities

Given this guidance, all face-to-face Scout meetings, activities and events must be suspended from Tuesday, 17 March 2020. This suspension applies to young people and adults, and will be until further notice.

We will continue to follow official guidance; the safety of everyone involved in Scouts, both young people and adults, is our number one priority. That is always at the heart of our decision making.

Government advice

The Government’s Coronavirus (COVID-19) webpage is frequently updated as things develop, so please check it regularly at

Given the latest Government guidance, we are cancelling the following events:

  • Day of Celebration at Windsor
  • Beaver and Cub Fundays at Gilwell Park and Woodhouse Park
  • Gilwell 24

We will be communicating to specific audiences about these event cancellations directly. We’d ask that you wait for this information to be sent out rather than contacting us immediately, due to the volume of enquiries we are currently receiving.

Event organisers

If you or your team are involved in organising any future Scout events, you will now need to review these plans and risk assessments given this new guidance.

Jamborees and other large events

If applicable, we suggest you regularly check the websites of relevant large-scale events, for example, Jamborees and camps, for specific updates from the organisers.

European Jamboree

The organisers of the European Jamboree 2020 in Poland have shared this update and continue to add to their frequently asked questions on the changing situation here. If applicable, please continue to monitor these updates.

Scout trips abroad

We asked the Government (the Department for Culture, Media and Sport) for clarity about youth groups travelling abroad, as the current advice only specifies school trips. We will let you know when we receive an update.

As well as the Government Coronavirus (COVID-19) webpage, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website has the latest information, guidance and travel advice, along with details of any restrictions – which must be followed.

Travel insurance

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation may have implications for your travel insurance. Check with your insurers directly about the levels of cover. If you have taken insurance through Unity, they have provided an update here.

Scout Information Centre

The Scout Information Centre will only be able to deal with emails and web chat until further notice. As you can imagine, we are experiencing an unprecedented level of enquiries at the moment, so please use the Government guidance as your primary reference where possible.

Scouting at home

We are planning to share activities for young people to do at home with their parents if families are faced with self-isolation. We will be communicating more about this soon.

A message from UK Chief Commissioner, Tim Kidd

I think we all agree that it’s in challenging times like these, that our Scout values matter most. We are talking to the Government and other community organisations to see how Scouts can support our country during this crisis. We must make sure that we do this in the safest possible way, and don’t put anyone at further risk. We will update you more on this over the coming weeks.

As always, I want to say a big thank you for everything you do for Scouts. By checking and following the latest Government advice and by taking a calm and measured approach, we can continue to ensure that young people and adults stay safe.

Thank you

Marden Scout Group – Coronavirus update

Posted on March 16th, 2020 by mardenscouts

12th March 2020

You will all be aware that the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation continues to develop around the world. Today, the Government changed the response phase to ‘delay’ and issued further advice. You will I am sure have questions about how Coronavirus (COVID-19) will affect how we operate Scouts here in the Marden.

The Scouts Association will continue to respond to the developing situation in a calm, measured and appropriate way, and we will follow, and react to, the current Government Health Advice as it evolves.

The safety of everyone involved in Marden Scouts is our number one priority and will be at the heart of our decision making. For example, if a local school has closed due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) risk, it may be appropriate to stop meetings, activities and events. As of this moment in time, we have no cause to cancel any meetings, but if the situation, or advice, changes we will of course let you know.

Just like everyone else, our Scouts and Leaders should follow the standard advice on self-isolation if necessary, which was updated today In addition please can I ask that:
• If your child, or indeed any member of your household, shows any symptoms or has been advised to self-isolate that they do not come to any Scout meetings or events until such time as they are no longer considered infectious
• You ensure that your child washes their hands thoroughly with soap and water before leaving home for Scout meetings and again upon returning home.

I would like to thank you all for your continued support and understanding; by following the latest Government advice we can continue to ensure that our young people and adults stay safe.

Yours in Scouting

Scout BBQ, Games and Group AGM

Posted on July 14th, 2019 by mardenscouts

This year our Scout Section will be hosting our AGM and so would like to invite all of the Group’s members and their Parents to come and join in some Scout team games along with sampling a Scout cooked burger!

During the evening parents will be invited to join members of the Executive Committee for the AGM. The AGM will include reports from each section leader about the fun and adventure the young people have enjoyed over the past year as well as details from the Executive Committee regarding the Groups development, expenditure, finances and an election of officers to the committee. It is also an open forum for yourselves to give your feedback to the Group.

At last year’s AGM we didn’t have any parents attend and so would ask that all try to come along this year. Without the input and support of our members and their families the Group will be unable to sustain itself let alone move forward and grow.

If you are unable to attend but are interested in being involved and helping the Group, then please do drop me an email

We look forward to seeing you all on the 19th.
