Volunteer Leaders Required

Posted on April 16th, 2017 by mardenscouts

Our team of adult leaders is made up of dedicated volunteers – they are the people who make Scouting happen

For most of the week they are business executives, engineers, plumbers, nurses, teachers, you name it, but the rest of the time they are the heart and soul of what we do.

Take part in your child’s adventure

Many groups will have a parent rota which you may be asked to join. You may feel that you don’t have the appropriate skills to help. However, the table below provides a snapshot of ways that parents get involved with their child’s Scout Group. We can, and do, use people with a variety of everyday skills.

 Skill

 How you can help

First aid qualification  Run a first aid session with young people or adults
Interest in nature  Take young people on a nature ramble
Accountancy  Become the treasurer at Group, District or County level
PR  Write a press release for the group
Cooking  Run a cooking session for young people
Gardening  Help us keep our grounds looking great
DIY  Paint doors or fix shelves in the HQ

We are currently looking for volunteers to help supervise Cubs, if you would like to help us please contact GSL@mardenscouts.org.uk

This year’s St George’s Day Parade will take place on Sunday 23rd April:

Arrive – 13:10, Mountain Warehouse, Week Street, Maidstone
Wear – Full smart uniform (bring waterproof coats if the weather is not looking great!)

For anyone who wishes to watch us Parade we will start from Week Street at 13:30, head along the High Street, turn down Mill Street and finish at All Saints Church.

Christmas Post 2016

Posted on November 30th, 2016 by mardenscouts

Christmas Post 2016

After last year’s success, back by popular demand is our Scout Christmas Post!
We can save you time and you can help us raise funds.  From 1st December there will be posting boxes round the village and you can post your Marden and Collier Street Christmas cards (fully addressed) along with a donation (suggested 20p – 50p). Each card will be franked and delivered throughout the village by Scout-Elves on Sunday 18th December.
There are two ways we need your help please:
• Use the boxes for your village post (locations of post boxes are on the attached poster). Note there will only be one delivery so this is not suitable for regular mail, only Christmas cards. Last posting date: 16th December!
• We need Beavers, Cubs and Scouts – accompanied by an adult – on Sunday 18th December to deliver cards. The Scout HQ will be open from 9 – 10:30am to collect a batch of cards and they must be delivered in daylight, the same day. We appreciate it is a busy time of year and it is the last Sunday before Christmas but the more help we get, the less each person will have to do!
With big thanks to Mrs Weir for again co-ordinating this for us.

From the GSL…

Posted on November 14th, 2016 by mardenscouts

Dear Parents and Friends of Marden Scout Group

It is great to report that the number of young people in the all 3 of our sections remain high, a fantastic indication that the section leader teams are giving our young people the type of activities, challenges and adventures that they obviously enjoy.  These high numbers however do pose their own challenge for the Scout Group in consideration with not only the available space of the Scout Hut but also the number of adult uniformed helpers needed to supervise the young people and conform to the Scout Association guidelines.

While it has to be said that the Scout Group would gratefully receive help from all those willing to volunteer their time, our Cub section with currently only two uniformed helpers, Claire and Ben is of urgent concern.

The Cub Pack will now have to limit membership numbers and the type of activities they are able to provide and should either Claire or Ben be unavailable to attend then meetings will need to be cancelled.  Restricted Cub membership will also have an impact on both of the other sections, with Beavers having to consider their member numbers and when members can move on, and a smaller Cub pack will obviously impact numbers moving on to the Scout Troop.

While there is a necessity for our uniformed helpers to participate in modular training, you don’t have to be Bear Grylls to volunteer! Having been involved in Marden’s leader team since 1993 I can personally say that seeing young people learn, grow and have fun is an enormous reward for the time I have given.

With growing numbers of residents in the Parish and young people making enquiries into joining the Scout Group, it is great opportunity for the Group to grow its numbers but without adult volunteers we will be unable to do so and leave many young people missing out on the fantastic experiences that Scouting offers.

If you are able to give some of your time and help, in particular our Cub Pack, then please contact either myself or the section leaders.

Yours in Scouting

Kieran Burns

Group Scout Leader

Remembrance Sunday 2016

Posted on November 5th, 2016 by mardenscouts

This year the service will be held on Sunday 13th November at St. Michael & All Angels Church in Marden.

We will meet at the Scout HQ at 10:20 and all members need to wear full uniform (with a poppy) ensuring they are as smart as possible (ironed scarves & shiny shoes!).  We will then parade to the church where the service will commence at 10.50am and will last for approximately 1 hour, during which a collection will be taken for the Royal British Legion.

We ask that parents collect their child from outside the church.

As a Group we ask all Leaders, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers to attend Marden’s Remembrance Service to pay our respects to all those who have given their lives while doing their duty. We are always very well represented by our members and we hope that the good turnout continues this year.

More Free Tea and Cake! Sunday 5th June 2016

Posted on May 30th, 2016 by mardenscouts

We would like to thank all those that attended the working party on the morning of Sunday 15th May, I think you would agree that our grounds look far smarter now.

Unfortunately with the time and amount of extra help we had we were unable to attend to all the areas that needed tackling, and so it will be necessary to hold another working party on Sunday 5th June 9.30am -12 noon.

We would ask that you please bring any tools you feel would best aid in gardening and clearing the grounds (we do need to clear Ivy off the back wall so step ladders / ladders would be useful, and  prune back some of the trees, so long pruning saws would be handy). We have also a considerable amount of rubbish around the grounds (broken chairs, old fire drums, old cupboards), so would be grateful to those with a car and boot space that would be willing to do a run to the tip.

In addition to us all wanting to enjoy a smart Scout HQ, we also have a commitment under the terms of our lease to keep the building and site looking presentable and so we would also ask if there were volunteers that would form a Maintenance Team and then organise themselves in the regular upkeep / development of the grounds and buildings.

If you or someone you know would like to help as part of the Maintenance Team then please speak with your Section Leader or please contact myself.

I am sure you will appreciate that the Section Leaders and Committee members give a considerable amount of time to the Scout Group to ensure all of our members receive a fantastic Scouting experience in safe, serviceable facilities.  Without the help of additional volunteers in the ongoing maintenance of the HQ & grounds the Scout Group would be forced to use contractors, and their cost would significantly eat into our funds.

We look forward to your help and support on the 5th
